On July 31,, 2023, Dr. Hubert Alton Eaker, beloved father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away quietly at his home of residence, 158 Carlyle Circle, Columbia, SC. Hu, as friends and family knew him, was born to Paul Alton Eaker and Florence Eula Dalton Eaker on September 13, 1938. He was one of 3 children and was the last surviving of the Eaker siblings. He attended elementary and high school in Anderson, SC, his hometown; but due to the unavailability of dates due to the Clemson College boys stealing all the good ones, he became a vehement Gamecock. He attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to become the first doctoral candidate in Psychology at USC, graduating in 1971.
He was married to the late Joyce Ann Betts Eaker and had two wonderful children who he is survived by: Christopher Titus Eaker (Alison Horton Eaker) and Jo Anne Betts Eaker. He is also survived by grandchildren Cassidy E. McLain (Charles McLain), Kelley E. Nance (Chris Nance), Savannah R. McNeil (Braden McNeil), Allyson T. Reinhardt, Madelaine F. Hyder, and Matthew A. Hyder. He was blessed by 6 great-grandchildren as well.
He is also survived by his sweet companion Pomeranian, Bandit, of 16 years. He was well-known throughout his neighborhood of being a friend to all animals, as he would pass out treats anytime he was around them.
A visitation drop-in will be held at his home on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 1-3pm and then a brief memorial service will follow for family-only. In place of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. Hubert A. Eaker to St Jude Children's Hospital either online or by mail to 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
